BUCHAN, John. Prester John. Cambridge, Houghton Mifflin Company 1938
8vo. Contemporary navy morrocco by Aspreys, spine with raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; pp. 272, four colour plates by Henry Pitz, one map; minimal sunning to spine, otherwise a fine copy.
Prester John was John Buchan's sixth published novel and reached an international readership. It was written several years after his return from South Africa, where he had served as Private Secretary to Lord Alfred Milner. Buchan was an early member of 'Milner's Kindergarten'; the nickname of a collective of young Britons who worked in the South African civil service between the Second Boer War and the founding of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
