This book was compiled by Richard Avedon as a presentation of his life through two hundred and forty-eight photographs taken over the course of his long career. Rather than offering a chronological account, Avedon grouped the photographs into three sections. As he explained in the introduction, ‘this book tracks the path of three crucial illusions in my life. The first section is about the illusion of laughter, and a young man’s discovery of the fine line between hilarity and panic. The second section is about the illusion of power. The third is about the loss of all illusions’. Through a considered interweaving of different areas of his life’s work, Avedon reflects on his own experience as a crucial chronicler of the twentieth century.
