Original hotel luggage label, c.1910. 140 x 100 mm. With the arrival of the Montreux-Bernese Oberland railway new hotel development was spurred on including the opening of the Grand Hotel in 1904. It became popular with British families seeking theraputic mountain air and quickly attracted large numbers seeking Winter sports as well for those seeking medical treatments. Between 1916 and 1918 the hotel served as a sanctuary for interned British prisoners of war who were sick or injured and required medical care in neutral Switzerland.
