The founder of Frances Le Figaro newspaper Hippolyte de Villemessant built the Villa Soleil in 1869 and in 1887 hotelier Antoine Sella bought the property and opened the Grand Hotel du Cap in 1889. In 1914 the Eden Roc pavillion was built 400 yards away from the main hotel. It was requisitioned as a military hospital during the second World War.
Guests have included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ernest Hemingway, Churchill, Elizabeth Taylor and the Kennedy's.
