The hotel opened in 1864 as part of the development of Monaco by the Societe des bains de mer de Monaco. It is located on Place du Casino. The hotels design was based on the Grand hotel in Paris by architect Dutrou.
The hotel quickly acquired an international reputation hosting numerous society events. Guests included such names as Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Rothschild.
During the second World War the hotel became a shelter for political refugees.
