"The iconic Royal Hotel & Winter Palace opened its doors in 1913. In the 1930s an Art Deco swimming pool (which still exists today) and new tennis courts transformed it into a luxurious "resort" ahead of its time. During World War II, the palace served as a vault for a Swiss bank's gold, stored in a bunker that now houses one of its restaurants. Since 1947, it has been owned by the Scherz family and has welcomed great fortunes and celebrities, including Roger Moore, David Bowie and Liz Taylor." (100 Swiss Historic Hotels by Jeremia Adatte).
