The hotel was built between 1914 and 1918. It was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet, one of Bombays best known architects. The hotel was located in an area known as the Ballard estate. With the opening of the Suez Canal trade through Bombay had increased dramatically resulting in a requirement for new docks and more accomodation.
The hotel attracted merchants and traders requiring upmarket facilities. George Wittet also designed the gateway of India and the Prince of Wales museum.
