ROCKHILL, William Woodville. The Land of the Lamas. Notes of a Journey through China, Mongolia and Tibet. New York: The Century Co. 1891.
8vo. Original cloth, leather lettering piece to spine; pp. viii, 399; frontispiece, illustrations to text, 2 double-page maps; label slightly chipped, cloth a little marked, internally, apart from very occasional minor spotting, a very good copy.
First edition. Rockhill was an American scholar-diplomat who won acclaim for himself with his travels in Mongolia and Tibet. The present book is his account of his first expedition of 1888-9, when he left Beijiing to explore Tibet. Rockhill crossed China to Koko-Nor and continued south-west hoping to reach Lhasa, but in fact diverted south east to Drechu and Tatsien-lu. His explorations resulted in the Smithsonian Institution's sponsoring of his second journey to Tibet in 1891-2.
