BULLARD, Sir Reader William. Britain and the Middle East. From the earliest Times to 1950. London: Hutchinson's University Library. 1951.

Small 8vo. Original cloth with dust-wrapper (not price-clipped), map endpapers; pp. 195; margins of wrappers with minimal wear and short closed tears, light offsetting from endpapers, otherwise fine.

Very rare first edition, first impression, of this primer on the subject. Bullard (1885-1976) was the son of a Walthamstow labourer. As a young man he was - largely self-taught - determined to join the Levant consular service and succeeded. He began his career in 1920 as Military Governor in Baghdad, and continued to serve in the Middle East up to his retirement in 1946.
