A novel ‘born out of intense fury, rage and, above all, compassion’ (blurb), Another Country addresses themes of race, homosexuality, and love. He started writing the novel in 1948 in Greenwich Village, but when he moved to Paris and back to New York, he brought the novel with him, completing it in Istanbul in 1962.
Another Country opens with one of the great characters of post-war American fiction, Rufus Scott, a Harlem jazz drummer adrift in New York. Through his tragic descent, Baldwin draws the reader into a world of love, desire, and violence in which the boundaries between intimacy and estrangement are continually tested.
