    • Impersonation and Romantic Intrigue

WODEHOUSE, P.G. The Mating Season. London: Herbert Jenkins Limited. 1949.

8vo. Publisher’s orange cloth, lettered in black to spine and upper board, illustrated dust-jacket by Frank Ford with printed price 8/6 to front flap; pp. 246, [2 (publisher’s advertisements)]; some minor soiling to white back panel of jacket, but otherwise a crisp example, a little spotting to top- and fore-edge of textblock; very good.

First edition, first printing of the ninth full-length novel featuring Bertie Wooster and the ever-resourceful Jeeves.

Bertie’s formidable Aunt Agatha once again orders him away, this time to Deverill Hall, where he is expected to stay with some of her friends and perform in a village concert. A peaceful stay in the country soon descends into chaos when Bertie is encouraged to impersonate his friend, Gussie Fink-Nottle, whose relationship with Madeline Bassett is already in jeopardy.

The novel was first published in the UK on 9 September 1949, and later published in the US on 29 November 1949.

      Mcllvaine A69a.
