Featuring Jeeves and Wooster
WODEHOUSE, P.G. The Man with Two Left Feet. Garden City: A.L. Burt Company ‘by arrangement with Doubleday, Doran & Company’. 1933.
8vo. Publisher’s orange cloth, upper board decorated in black and spine lettered in black, illustrated dust-jacket by Harry Beckhoff, verso of jacket with advertisements for ‘Burt’s Popular Copyright Fiction’, no printed price as called for by McIlvaine; pp. [4], 283, [1 (blank)]; chipping to spine ends and wear to edges of jacket, a little toning and rubbing, wear to cloth at spine ends, spine lightly sunned; two small bookseller’s tickets to rear pastedown; very good.
First US edition, first printing of the Wodehouse collection notable for the first appearances of Bertie Wooster, his valet Jeeves, and his formidable Aunt Agatha in ‘Extricating Young Gussie’.
These stories were first published in the UK in The Strand Magazine from March 1911 to May 1916, and in the US in various magazines between 1911 and 1918. As the stories had already been widely distributed in periodicals, Wodehouse’s US publishers (Doubleday, Doran & Co.) saw little purpose in issuing them together in book form despite holding the American rights; instead, the collection was issued by the reprint publisher, A.L. Burt.
In this collection, the stories ‘Absent Treatment’, ‘Rallying Around Old George’, and ‘Doing Clarence a Bit of Good’ did not appear in the first UK edition of this title, but later in My Man Jeeves (1919).
