A blend of fantasy, farce, the supernatural, romance, and satire, The Master and Margarita is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century literature. Written between 1928 and 1940, the novel was published posthumously in the Russian magazine Moscow in 1966-1967, in a heavily censored form. The first complete edition was published in Russian in 1973.
