BERNERS, Charles Hugh. Two Months in Syria in 1875; or, Reminiscences of Tent Life. London: William Hunt and Company. 1876.
8vo. Original green cloth gilt; pp. xi, 310, [2], [12 advertisements]; one folding map; light slant to binding and wear to extremities, title-page with repaired short marginal tear, a little spotted here and there, the advertisements at the end more so; otherwise very good; bookplate John Brinton.
First and only edition. The author's account of his travels from Beyrout to Jerusalem, Damascus, Baalbek and return to Beyrout. Berners clearly enjoyed the mule ride across Anti-Lebanon and Lebanon, visiting Zahlé, at that time the largest 'village' in Lebanon with 10,000 inhabitants. He meets Thompson, probably the author of the influential The Land and the Book (first, 1859, many later expanded editions).
