Original brown cloth, gilt lettering and vignette to front, gilt lettering to spine, sometime rebacked with original spine laid on; pp. xvi + 395, hand-coloured frontispiece and title-page, folding map and 4 plates; extremities a little bumped, very good. Provenance: front pastedown with library plate of Flyfishers' Club, with deaccession stamp.
First edition. Scarce. Henry Garrett Newland (1804 - 60) was the rector of Westbourne in West Sussex. Most of his published works were books and pamphlets in support of the Tractarian movement, but he also wrote a work on Norwegian landscape and this entertaining, anecdotal volume on fishing in Ireland.
