Signed by Douglas Dunn
DUNN, Douglas. Elegies. London: Faber and Faber. 1988.
8vo. Original wrappers designed by Pentagram; pp. 64; small mark and touch of abrasion to spine panel, faint spotting to upper and fore-edge of the page block; signed without dedication in black ink to the title page; a near fine copy.
A signed first edition, first printing of the paperback edition (simultaneously issued with the hardback) of Dunn’s heartfelt Elegies, written in memory of his wife Lesley.
The poems collected in Dunn’s sixth collection were written following the death of the poet's wife Lesley in March 1981, aged 37. Michael Longley later wrote that Dunn "was hurt into the sorrowful beauty of [the] Elegies". They have, with justification, been compared to the extraordinary series of poems written by Thomas Hardy following the death of his first wife Emma. The collection was the Whitbread Book of the Year in 1985.
