    • Beardsley Versus the Ancient Greeks

ARISTOPHANES; Jack BRUSSEL (translator); Aubrey BEARDSLEY (illustrator). The Lysistrata … Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and ancient Athenian artists. New York: Land’s End Press. 1968.

Folio. Original cloth, stamped in gilt to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt, in publisher’s slipcase; pp. 90. [2]; light rubbing to extremities, slipcase a little worn and soiled, else a near-fine copy.

Limited edition, no. 304 of 1,500 copies numbered and signed by the translator, pairing Beardsley’s illustrations with examples of Ancient Greek art.

The ‘Jack Brussel’ who translated this edition may well be Jacob ‘Jake’ Brussel (1899–1979), the publisher of erotica and proprietor of the New York City antiquarian bookselling firm J.R. Brussel. He produced the notorious, unauthorised Medvsa (or Medusa) edition of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, published under a false Mexico imprint; in 1940 Brussel was sentenced to three years in prison for obscenity.
