First edition. This book was produced as a result of the 1980 Planet Earth Conference at the Institute of Ecotechnics in Aix-en-Provence. It was a multi-disciplinary conference of scientists, artists and innovators who gathered to discuss the future of the ecology. The publication is most notable for the contribution by William Burroughs, a typically vivid speech on the four horsemen of the apocalypse in which he envisions that the only possible future for humanity is in space, which was later published as a standalone piece. The diversity of the conference is seen in some of the other contributors, including Thor Heyerdahl, famed for the Kon-Tiki expedition, and Ghillean Prance, later director of Kew Gardens and a trustee of the Eden Project.
