The second play from playwright Alan Bennett opened at the Queen's Theatre in October 1971 and was a production that ran for nine months. Originally entitled A Serious Man, it was directed by Patrick Garland and featured the film star Kenneth More. The play revolves around the life of a Labour MP and his relationship to the mundanity of a life wihtout change. The play received the Evening Standard Award for the Best Comedy of 1971, although its humour is often married to a more serious atmosphere.
As Bennett asserts in his Author's Note, "The text here printed differs in some respects from that first presented at the Queen's Theatre….: the jokes were largely left intact while the serious content of the play suffered".
B.A. Young, in a review for The Financial Times, observed of the play; "Mr Bennett has an uncanny gift for getting into the minds of a wide diversity of creatures."
