Oblong folio. Original cream cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt-speckled endpapers; pp. [iv], 10, [2], [8], 260 photogravures on plates, captions in Japanese, introductory text in both Japanese and English, covers a little spotted, otherwise fine.
Unrecorded, apart from a listing of the Royal Swedish Library's accquisitions in 1921. The Imperial Theatre opened in March 1911 across the Imperial Palace grounds, but had no close connection with the government. The architecture was strongly European-influenced and it was commercially run by a group of entrepreneurs. The theatre offered a mix of kabuki and Western pieces, and was the realization of the dreams of the Japanese theatre reformers of the 1880s.
