First edition. As a prelude to the Nares-led British Arctic Expedition to Greenland, the RGS reissued articles published in its own Transactions and Proceedings "for the use of the expedition" (Preface). The articles collected include Robert Brown on Greenland's geology, von Wrangell on the attainment of the pole, Dr. Rink on Kane's discoveries, Irminger on the Arctic current around Greenland, and Collinson on the Behring Straits. Ethnological papers on the Eskimo include those by Clements Markham, Drs. Rink, Simpson, and others. This collection of essays, like its companion scientific manual, issued for the same purposes, has now become quite scarce.
