PARRA, Nicanor. Anti-Poems. San Francisco: City Lights Books. 1960.

Small 4to. Yellow template enclosing red square contianing yellow lettering; pp. [4], 5-32; overall shelfwear with slight brusing to lower corner of front cover; minimial staining on rear cover; Rubbed at spine with some loss of layer; internally near fine; signed by Ferlinghetti on title page.

First and only edition, signed by the "editor" Ferlinghetti.

Presiding over the best Chilean poets of the 20th century this edition was published to great acclaim in 1954. Pablo Nerudo would speak of Parra's verse; "He dares the the most difficult explorations…His southern imprint will remain on the whole domain of poetry".

"I always associated poetry with the voice of a priest in the pulpit. … Let the birds do the singing", said the Mathematician and Physicist, Parra, on his bold opinion of the art. Unlike his contemporaries, he rejected lyricism in favour of an ironic and colloquial voice which he christened his very own style of writing, "Anti-Poetry".

This rare signed first edition is No. 12 in the famous City Lights Books Pocket Poets Series and is translated by Jorge Eliott.
