NANSEN, Fridtjof. "Farthest North" being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship Fram 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen with an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup Captain of the Fram. London, George Newnes, 1898.

Two volumes, 8vo. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, upper boards blocked in gilt, silver and scarlet, with vignettes depicting Fram icebound, spines blocked in gilt and silver with titles and vignettes, yellow endpapers, all edges speckled in red; pp. I: xv, [1 (blank)], 480; II: viii, 456; half-title in volume I (not called for in II), portrait frontispiece in volume I and monochrome frontispiece in II, 64 monochrome plates, one colour-printed plate (all in pagination), one colour-printed folding map by John Bartholomew & Co., monochrome illustrations and diagrams, 46 full-page, one full-page map, and letterpress tables in the text; light offsetting from endpapers, otherwise a superb set, with the binding extremely bright.
Second English edition. First published in Norway under the title Fram over polhavet, den norske polarfaerd 1893-1896 (Oslo: 1896-1897), the first English edition with a less evocative binding was published in 1897 and this, the second, in the following year. This is the issue bound from the parts, the last instalment of which contained the binding enabling the owner to have it bound.
