First edition, Elspeth Huxley's copy, with her bookplate. One of the best books on the country after it was closed to foreigners by the 1964 revolution. 'Esmond Bradley Martin is the first writer to have been granted full authority to carry out research and fieldwork on Zanzibar and even Pemba' (inside front flap). - Elspeth Huxley spent much of her life in Colonial Kenya and immortalized her experience there in The Flame Trees of Thika and Mottled Lizard. Her books were sold for charity in 1998 by the East Africa Women’s League, Janet Carroll, wife of the Douglas Carrol, former ship-broker in Zanzibar, bought it. By descent.
