'the first scholarly anti-napoleonic history'
LANFREY, Pierre. The History of Napoleon the First ... Second Edition. London and New York, Macmillan and Co., 1886.
Four volumes, 8vo. Original green cloth, boards with borders of double blind rules, spines lettered and ruled in gilt; extremities very lightly rubbed and bumped, ownership inscriptions to half-titles.
Second English edition. The French historian and writer Lanfrey (1828-1877) died before his work was completed, and thus his biography only covers Napoleon's life to 1811. It was originally published under the title Histoire de Napoléon Ier in five volumes between 1867 and 1875, and enjoyed great success, achieving a number of reprints in the following years (the first volume had reached a ninth edition by 1876). The first English edition was published by Macmillan between 1871 and 1879. Lanfrey's work was notable as 'the first scholarly anti-Napoleonic history' (Horward p. 53), and the 'première biographie hostile à Napoléon qui cherche à détruite la légende impériale' (Martin-Pigeard).
Ayres II, p. 192; Kircheisen 4009; for the French ed., cf.: Horward III.299; Martin-Pigeard p. 546.
