Milan Kundera (1929-2023) published Identity in 1998 and it would be his second novel in French. The novel uses the intimate relationship between a woman named Chantal and her lover Jean Marc as a catalyst to exlpore the notion that one's identiy is inextricably bound to the relationship between the self and others who make malleable our essence, He claims that identity is shaped by interaction rather than existing as an autonous entitity. He writes; "To ensure that the self doesn't shrink, to see that it holds on to its volume, memories have to be watered like potted flowers, and the watering calls for regular contact with the witnesses of the past, that is to say, with friends".
