KANAAN, George. Beyond Lebanon's Peaks. An Odyssey from Village School to Harvard and from Banking to a Prince's Court. London, Nomad, 2022.
8vo. Original boards with illustrated dust-wrappers; pp. 217, plates after photographs; new.
First edition. 'This lyrical account of Kanaan’s life, growing up in the mountain town of Suq el-Gharb is formed by his mother who told him, "You will go to exciting places all over the world, but one day you will be tired of them. Lebanon will always be your home". Kanaan’s childhood was idyllic, colourful traditions but with a broad minded international outlook. He did indeed take to the skies. Harvard beckoned. International banking followed' (Foreword by Lady Olga Maitland). George Kannan tells as well of his enjoyment of the arts and literature, his thoughts on geopolitics and economic developments as not only determined by 'the economy' itself, but by deeply rooted cultural determinants. His insight into Middle Eastern societies and their organization can be revealing at times and had to be redacted by legal teams.
