HOGARTH, William (1697-1764). Here Justice triumphs in his Elbow Chair…
Original copper engraving after Hogarth, re-worked & published by Thomas Cook, Paternoster Row, London, c.1800. 525 x 685 mm.
The print shows a pregnant woman pleading with a seated judge for the rich old lecher to provide security for her child.
The publisher Thomas Cook produced his own engravings based on the prints by Hogarth. His intention was to make some of the sad faces look happier as this made them more appealing to customers at the time. Although these prints were produced before the Heath edition of 1822 it is important to point out that they are not produced from the original plates by Hogarth.
