One prominent and ongoing theme in the poetry of Allen Ginsberg is his use of 'mind breaths'. These constitute breaks in the poem with the intention of encouraging the reader to pause and reflect as well as to create a sense of his prevailing and unique play with rhythm.
Among the poems included alongside the title poem are "On Neruda's Death" (concerning Pablo Neruda, who passed away under quite controverial circumstances in 1973), and "We Rise on Sunbeams and Fall in the Night" (about the death of William Carlos Williams, who died after a series of strokes in 1963).
