GANE, Douglas Montague. Handbook of Tristan Da Cunha. [London: Preedy's]. 1924.
8vo. Original red printed wrappers, wire stitched; pp. 48; highly illustrated (including advertisements); wrappers a bit darkened in places, staples oxidized, internally very good.
First edition published on the occasion of the British Empire Exhibition. A very rare monograph on the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, giving a history and description of "the loneliest British possession" in the middle of the South Atlantic.
The author, as a very young man fell captive to the charm of Tristan da Cunha as he passed by the island in 1884 on a clipper from England to Australia. In middle age, as a barrister, he campaigned relentlessly for the islanders, in order to get them more support from the British government.
