FREUD, Sigmund. Reflections. New York: Moffat, Yard and Company.1922.

8vo. Original publishers’ red cloth with gilt title lettering to front board and spine, ‘Brentano’s’ booksellers label to rear pastedown; blue dustjacket with black lettering; pp. [vi], 71, [3]; bumping to head and tail of spine with some fading to title, slight general toning to text block; some loss to head and tail of dustjacket spine and front corners, markings to rear panel; otherwise a very good copy.

Reflections, written in 1915 during the early stages of World War I, is comprised of two essays, "The Disappointments of War," and "Our Attitude Towards Death,", both of which examine the psychological impact of WWI on individuals and society as a whole. Where many people were struggling to comprehend the mass destruction then emerging across Europe, Freud’s reflections explored the inability to confront the inevitability of death and the effects of brutality as it was being inflicted on civilisation, encapsulating the prevailing mood of disillusionment.
