DEIGHTON, Len. Horse Under Water. London: Jonathan Cape, 1963.

Crown 8vo. Original red boards, stamped in blind and in black with 'stamp' device (Downgraded to Unclassified); lettered in gilt to spine with publisher's device gilt to foot; in the original unclipped pictorial dust jacket designed by Raymond Hawkey (16s. Net); crossword puzzle endpapers; pp. [xii], 13-255, [i]; spine ends and corners a little bumped, Foyles bookseller sticker to front paste-down; edges a tad spotted; the jacket a little toned, creased and shelf-worn, with some rubbing to the tips of spine; very good.
First edition, lacking the loose publisher's competition crossword slip. The second Harry Palmer novel following on from the great success of the Ipcress File, and is predominently set in a small fishing village in Portugal. The endpapers reflect the protagonist's habit of endlessly writing and replacing words in crossword puzzles.
