Contemporary German half-calf over mottled boards, spines with raised bands, contrasting lettering-pieces, compartments ornamented in gilt; engraved frontispieces and title-vignettes to all volumes apart from index volume, engraved plates, maps, plans and tables; occasional light wear to extremities, a few traces of insect damage to a few corners; internally, apart from very occasional light spotting, very clean and fresh; an attractive set, uniformly bound, from the library Otto A. Hirsch with stamps to front fly-leaves.
First edition in German of this impressive history of France, written by the Jesuit historian Gabriel Daniel, 'best known by his Histoire de France depuis l’établissement de la monarchie française (first complete edition, 1713), which was republished in 1720, 1721, 1725, 1742, and (the last edition, with notes by Father Griffet) 1755–1760' (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th edition, online). - Complete sets are very rare, both institutionally and commercially, one German dealer offers a few single volumes, each for £190.
