BURROUGHS, William. The Soft Machine. London: Calder and Boyars. 1968.

8vo. Original publisher's orange cloth with gilt lettering to spine; Brown dust jacket with white title; pp. [iv], 188, [iv]; Slight foxing to top edge, bumping to head of dust jacket spine and to top corner of front wrapper, toning to rear wrapper; otherwise near fine.

Third revised edition.

Set in a dystopian future and forming the first part in the Nova Trilogy, (which includes Nova Express and The Ticket That Exploded), The Soft Machine was composed using Burrough's famous 'Cut Up Method' from which he took material from his manuscript, The Word Hoard, which also formed the basis for his infamous The Naked Lunch.

Not only are characters from Junkie and Queer recycled but also the characters of other writers feature, such as from the poems of Rudyard Kipling and a short story of Herman Melville.

Soft Machine had undergone two previous revisions before this publicaiton and this third edition is distinct from its previous forms, not only in added and excised mateiral, but also that it boasts an "Appendix".
