BULL, Jacob Breda. Fridtjof Nansen. A Book for the Young. By Jacob B. Bull. Translated from the Norwegian by the Rev. Mordaunt R. Barnard, Vicar of Margaretting, one of the translators of "Farthest North". London, Isbister and Company, 1898.
8vo. Original grey pictorial cloth, embossed in gilt, printed in white and brown, bevelled edges, patterned endpapers; pp. [ii], 132, [6, publisher's advertisements], Arctic map as frontispiece, illustrations in the text (after wood-engravings and photographs, some full-page), initially and towards the end a little spotted, ownership inscription to verso of front fly-leaf, otherwise a rather good copy of a rare item.
Very rare first English edition of this early book for young readers on the childhood, upbringing and later achievements of Nansen, beautifully produced and designed. - The Norwegian edition is even rarer (given the amount of juvenile readers the small country had and how they read the books to bits).
