First edition. Second series, no. 183. Produced for the 150th anniversary of the Hakluyt Society, the work has a preliminary essay on the Society's publications, which is followed by biographical essays on important figures in the Society's history, including Henry Yule, Clements Markham, and R.A. Skelton, and a bibliography of the Society's publications from 1847 to 1995. This copy is from the library of the historian Professor Felipe Fernández-Armesto (winner of the John Carter Brown and Caird Medals), and bears his pencilled notes on the rear endpapers and inside lower panel of the dustwrapper, preparatory to his review of the volume for the Literary Review (January 1997, pp. 56-57); loosely inserted are: a Hakluyt Society compliments slip; a typescript of the review headed [?for facsimile transmission] 'To Auberon Waugh, Nancy Sladeck from Felipe Fernández-Armesto', folio, 5 pages on rectos only, stapled at corner and paginated in type and manuscript; 2 leaves extracted from the Literary Review bearing the review. Fernández-Armesto was sometime a member of the Council of the Hakluyt Society and co-edited The Malaspina Expedition 1789-1794 for the Society (3 vols, 2001-2004).
