BLACKIE, George S. Cretins and Cretinism. A Prize Thesis of the University of Edinburgh. Edinburgh: Maclachlan & Stewart. 1855.

8vo. Later grey-green boards with printed paper title label on the spine; pp. vii + 70 + advert leaf; spine a little sunned, very good.
First edition. Scarce. George Stodart Blackie (1834 - 1881) was something of a prodigy, receiving a gold medal for this student thesis at the age of 21. He settled in Tennessee in 1857 as a botanist and physician. This is a well-regarded study of the distribution, cause, symptoms and treatment of cretinism, a now outdated term for congenital iodine deficiency syndrome.
