12mo., bound by Houghton & Gunn in full navy morocco, ruled and decorated to boards and spine with repeat gilt fleurs de lys devices, decorative borders, and spine lettered directly in gilt; a.e.g.; gilt dentelles over blue silk endpapers; two red ribbon markers; [unpaginated] on India paper; a beautiful copy, slightly bumped to edges and corners; with two previous ownership inscriptions to one of the front endleaves (dated 1899 and 1948); a couple of small spots and marks affecting prelims, else remarkably clean.
A beautiful binding by Houghton & Gunn, one of London's top stationers and book binders. The company was bought by Asprey at the turn of the century. This copy from the library of the late Baroness Jane Williams (formerly Jane Welby), mother of the current Archbishop of Canterbury and wife of Lord Williams of Elvel. Williams was Winston Churchill's personal secretary between the years of 1949 and 1955. The second latin inscription to the front endleaf is of Carolo Powell Williams (Baron Williams of Elvel).
