BEACH, William N. In the Shadow of Mount McKinley. New York, Derrydale Press, 1931.

Tall 8vo. Original dark blue cloth, upper cover and spine titled in gilt, on the upper cover surmounting a gilt elk head trophy; pp. xiii, 289, with a colour frontispiece of wild sheep on a mountainside after an original painting by Carl Rungius, 8 other black and white plates by the artist, 60 black and white photographic plates on 27 leaves, one folding map and 2 double-page maps printed on the endpapers of the Alaska Mountain Range, including Mount McKinley National Park, and showing the author's route in red; front inner hinge strengthened, spine faded, margins a little toned, as usual; still a very good copy of a North American big game classic.

First edition, one of 750 copies printed, this one a signed presentation copy, inscribed on initial blank. 'A popular work among hunting enthusiasts as well as photography buffs ... because of the author's camera work. The first third of the book is mostly travel and shooting with the camera, but in the latter portion of the 1925 expedition and the ensuing expeditions, there is a large amount of sheep hunting as well as numerous incidents of hunting caribou, grizzly and moose. The book concludes with several lengthy chapters on North American big game' (Heller 21).
