The Waldorf Astoria originated as two hotels. The Waldorf Hotel opened in 1893 on 5th Avenue and 33rd Street. The Astoria Hotel opened in 1897 on 5th Avenue and 34th Street.
The hotels merged in 1897 and were connected by a long corridor known as "Peacock Alley." The hotel had 1300 bedrooms making it the largest hotel in the World at the time. The hotel was demolished in 1929 to make way for the construction of the Empire State building.
The new hotel was built in art deco style on Park Avenue in 1931.
