The building is located at the junction of East 59th Street and Fifth Avenue.
The site had been occupied since the early 1890's by the Hotel New Netherland which was built for William Astor and demolished in 1926. The new Sherry-Netherland was opened in 1927 and designed by Schultze and Weaver.
Louis Sherry was a noted restaurateur, famous for ice creams and had run a Hotel and restaurant Sherrys at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue.
When the New York City land marks commission created the Upper East Side historic district in 1981 the Sherry-Netherland was included within its boundaries.
