The Compagnie was founded by Georges Nagelmakers to establish a network of luxurious long distance passenger trains across Europe. The Oberland Express was inaugurated in 1896 and ran until 1939.
The Route from Paris (with connections from Calais and Ostend, for London passengers) went via Berne to Interlaken. The route during the nineteen twenties largely met the increasing numbers of Winter Sports enthusiasts but also catered to Summer visitors.
