WRITING IMPLEMENTS - French Republic or Directoire (1792-1804) cast bronze and ormolu gilt inkwell with hinged lid. ~i~France,~b~ c. 1793
This inkwell has all the insignia of the French Republic (fasces, torch of liberty, oak branches for glory on the battlefield). Finely executed, a little surface wear, without glass insert, height 85 mm, diameter at base 58 mm, no glass insert. This inkwell was probably part of a large desk set, decorated with the insignia of the young and struggling French Republic. These complete sets fetch impressive and silly prices on the market.
