For much of its life the Hotel was known as the Alexandria Savoy. The Hotel opened in 1907 and was one of the Cities oldest Hotels. The Hotel offered luxurious accomodation and even the bedrooms were furnished by Maple and Company of London and Krieger of Paris.
The Savoy appears in Baedekers guide to Egypt for 1911 and 1914 but disappears by the next edition in 1929. The Savoy was sold in the late 1920's and was renamed Claridge's. In the 1930's it became the British Navy Club and eventually apartments.
During the Hellenistic period Alexandria was home to a lighthouse ranking among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
