LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was a German passenger carrying hydrogen filled rigid airship that flew from 1928 to 1937. It was named after the German airship pioneer Ferdinand Von Zeppelin and was conceived and operated by Dr. Hugo Eckner the chairman of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin.
Graf Zeppelin made 590 flights operated by a crew of 36 and could carry just 24 passengers. It offered the first commercial transatlantic passenger flight and made the first circumnavigation of the World by an airship over a period of 21 days.
It was largely funded by the German Government and operating costs were offset by cargo and passenger fares, along with the support of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Hamburg America Line:
The shipping company acted as agents for Luftschiffbau Zeppelin and were able to sell tickets at Hapag offices worldwide.
Flight to Egypt and Palastine 9th April 1931:
This label was collected on this flight. The LZ 127 left Friedrichshafen flying over France and the Mediterranean to Egypt. After landing at Cairo, Dr. Eckner went to visit King Faud of Egypt, whilst LZ 127 left for Palestine on a day trip. On the airships return to Cairo Dr. Eckner flew it back to Germany
