The Cunard White Star Line was a British shipping line which existed between 1934 and 1949. The Cunard Line and White Star Lines were forced to merge by the British government when they were facing financial problems. They were required to merge their North Atlantic operations.
The Queen Mary was built in 1936 by John Brown & Co on Clydebank. She won the "Blue Riband" on her maiden voyage to New York on 27th May 1936.
Following the outbreak of the Second World War she was converted to a troopship. By the mid 1960's Queen Mary was ageing and operating at a loss and was finally retired in 1967. She now resides at Long Beach California as a hotel and event facility.
