The hotel was founded by Meguerditch Tokatlian, an Ottoman citizen of Armenian descent. The hotel opened in 1897 on the Rue de Pera and was originally known as the Splendide but was soon renamed Tokatlian.

The hotels furnishings were all brought from Europe and it soon became a popular venue for members of Constantinople high society. Guests have included Leon Trotsky. Josephine Baker and Kemal Ataturk. Today the hotel has closed and only shops survive on the ground floor.
