In 1919 the opening of the Simplon Tunnel allowed the introduction of a more Southerly route for the train via Paris - Milan - Venice - Trieste and Belgrade to Constantinople.
This service ran in addition to continuing services on the original route via Paris - Vienna and Budapest.
During the 1930's the train acquired its reputation for comfort and luxury. The Simplon-Orient Express services incorporated sleeping cars which ran from Calais.
