Charing Cross station was planned as the London terminus of South Eastern railway and opened in 1864. The Charing Cross Hotel designed by Edward Middleton Barry opened in May 1865.
The hotel would provide accomodation for the many passengers arriving on the continental boat trains. Ownership of the hotel passed to Southern railway in 1923. Following bomb damage in 1941 the two upper floors were reconstructed in 1953.
