The Hotel opened in 1901 in response to the housing needs arising from the opening of the Algeciras - Bobadilla railway. It was built in British Colonial style imported from the nearby British overseas territory of Gibraltar.
The original Hotel burned down in 1928 but was rebuilt and opened in 1932. The Hotel catered very much to Ocean Liner passengers travelling to the Far East and who wanted to break their journey in Gibraltar. There wer no quality Hotels in Gibraltar before 1932, when the Rock Hotel opened.
Many famous guests include Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Orson Welles.
